B65 is one of the twenty-three families in Greg Miller's cooperative chestnut breeding program, with around 416 trees planted across participating orchards in fifteen states.
Like the rest of the B-series it carries no published description. These are working codes rather than named cultivars, and that is the point — Miller's program puts the offspring of promising parents into orchards across the country specifically so that growers in different soils and climates can find out what they do. Nearly thirty growers are running more than twelve thousand of these trees.
The background is uncertain. A related selection, Miller's B-99, came from a Korean chestnut and was chosen for vigor, a straight trunk, and surviving wet ground that killed the trees around it. If the series shares that heritage, these may lean toward timber form rather than nut production.
