BRIEF:
One of the Yixian selections out of Anhui Province, China — the same family as Yixian Large. A promising background, and we are waiting to see what this one does.
DETAILED:
YNW stands for Yixian North West, one of a group of selections Michael Nave made from seedlots out of Yixian, in the southern tip of Anhui Province in China. What the S denotes we have not yet established — it may mark a size grade, the way LG marks the large-nut selections, or it may distinguish a second tree. We are working on it.
The family it belongs to is a strong one. Yixian Large produced the second largest nuts of any chestnut of any species at the University of Missouri repository in 2009, and tied for first in a taste test there in a different year. Yixian Orange is rated among the best tasting Chinese nuts grown in America. Yixian Good Flavor carries an unusually long drop, from early in the season through to late. The cultivar Shing came out of the same seed lots as Yixian Large.
Nobody has published anything on this particular selection. We have the trees, and we will find out.
