Liu LG is Liu, selected for size. The LG suffix means large, the same convention that gives us Yixian Large, and as far as we can tell it traces to the same mother tree rather than a separate line.
Everything on our Liu page applies here: a red-type Chinese chestnut named for the researcher Liu, a seedling of the Chinese red cultivar Honglizi, with red new growth, reddish stems, red autumn leaves and some strikingly red burs. Ours have been in the ground since 2023 and have performed well — moderate vigor, but a heavy and consistent set of viable nuts.
And the same reason for planting it. When Greg Miller stored nuts from dozens of cultivars for seed, Liu came out with near-zero blossom end rot and near-zero storage rot, two years running. Nothing else he tested came close. Storage is the quality that decides whether a nut ships sound and whether a customer comes back, and almost nobody markets on it because almost nobody has the data.
