A numbered selection whose origins we are still tracing. The trees are in the ground and we are watching them.

DETAILED:
65-11 is one of the codes on our tags that we have not yet run to ground. There is no published description of it anywhere we have looked, and it does not appear on any breeder's list we have found.

What we can say is that the format is familiar. Greg Miller's Ohio breeding program uses year-and-number codes exactly like this one — the cultivars now known as Gideon and Amy were 72-283 and 72-400 before they were named, both from his 1972 planting. On that pattern, 65-11 would be a selection from 1965. That is a reasonable guess and nothing more.

Chestnut growing is full of these. Trees move between growers with a tag and a handshake, and the paperwork does not always keep up. We would rather tell you we are still working on it than invent a history for it.

What the trees do here is a question our own records will answer, and that is the part that will end up mattering most.
